Invitation

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join us at the Fifth International Symposium on von Hippel-Lindau, to be held in Praglia Abbey in Bresseo, a suburb of Padua, Italy, 6-8 June 2002.

This is an opportunity for the scientific community to share ideas and collaborate to accelerate VHL research and clinical care.  There will also be an opportunity for exchange of opinions and experience among physicians and families.  The fight against VHL requires the highest collaboration and involvement of all the community.

Other goals of the meeting will be the upgrading of the international VHL mutation and phenotype-genotype databases, the delivering of new guidelines for clinical management of VHL patients and the strengthening of relationships among VHL patients and physicians in Europe.  Since the discovery of the gene for VHL in 1993, four Symposia have helped to accelerate progress in research and in the clinical understanding of VHL. We look forward to your participation in the Padua meeting, where we will look at ways of moving VHL care into a new era of less invasive management and more effective preventive medicine.

-- Giuseppe Opocher, M.D., University of Padua

Organization of the Meeting

Technical Language: A Symposium is intended as a forum for physicians to share information with one another. Three tracks are suggested, depending on the attendee’s background in genetics, medicine, and VHL.

Track 1: Full program. Assumes some familarity with molecular biology. Includes genetic research, genotype/phenotype alignment, and clinical management.

Track 2: Physicians unfamiliar with molecular genetics may wish to begin with Track II on Friday morning. Includes genotype/phenotype alignment studies from several countries, and clinical management practices and advances. A brief summary of the Basic Science Day will be presented on Saturday.

Track 3: Family members are encouraged to begin with Track 3 on Friday morning. Includes all clinical management sessions, with information on insurance and DNA testing. A high-level summary of the Basic Science Day will be presented on Saturday.

Travel and Hotel Information

Hotel accommodations: Hotel reservations may be made in Padua or Abano Terme.  Shuttle bus service will be provided for attendees from these two towns.  A limited number of rooms are available on site at Praglia Abbey.  Precedence will be given to people with mobility disabilities.  Please contact info@vhl.org to inquire about onsite rooms.

Dr. Opocher has recommended that we not stay in Padua itself.  There is a gay pride demonstration planned in Padua during the time of the meeting, and he expects a lot of traffic.  Abano Terme, nearby on the other side of the Abbey, is a lovely little spa town, with hot springs baths and a very relaxed atmosphere.  The Abbey is 5 minutes drive from Abano Terme, or 20 minutes from Padua.

Airport: Venice International airport is about 40 km (30-40 minutes) away from Padua and Abano Terme.  It is possible to make reservations for a shuttle from and to the Venice airport at a price that is approximately $20 USD per person.  The two main shuttle services are:

Other airports are farther away, but are manageable by train.  Rental cars are very expensive, with nearly 100% tax added on.  Train and bus travel is very realistic.

  • Verona, 100 km from Padua
  • Bologna, 115 km
  • Bergamo, 190 km
  • Milano Linate 220 km
  • Milano Malpensa, 260 km

Arriving at one of these airports, a shuttle bus will drive you to the railway station where you have a train connection to Padua every hour or less.  You will be in Padua within 2 hours.

Connections by train from Pisa are more awkward, with trains about every 2 hours or more, and a change in Firenze and sometimes also in Bologna.

Please Note:

  • **All attendees must make their own hotel arrangements**
  • * A limited number of partial scholarships are available.
