Szczecin (or Stettin in German) is a port on the Baltic Sea. During the Second World War it was part of Germany.
This is one of the buildings of the Pomeranian Academy of Medicin (Medical School).
Here Karol Krzystolik is coming out of the Administration Building of the Medical School, another stately old building.
Here are Dr. Karol Krzystolik, an ophthalmologist doing a Ph.D. dissertation project on von Hippel-Lindau disease, and his colleague, Dr. Piotr Hadaczek, a research molecular biologist. They are working at the Hereditary Cancer Center in Szczecin.
I went home on the trolley with Karol's wife, Ola. We stopped at this small grocery store. For most things, you go up to the street window and ask for what you need. For butter and cold cuts, you go inside the door at the right and ask at the counter. Kolporter is the name of the chain of convenience stores. S.A. is the equivalent of "Inc."
We went to visit a VHL family on this nice quiet residential street.
We had tea with Mrs. J., whose son has VHL. Like other homes I visited, hers was very prettily decorated, with hand-made cutwork linens on the table and several pieces of beautiful Polish crystal.
Here are Karol, Ola, and their son Jashka on the train platform, ready to go to Krakow on the overnight train. We got on the train at 10:30 pm and shared a couchette compartment with four bunks. Ola and I had the lower berths, Karol shared an upper berth with Jashka.
