Dr. Steven Libutti |
Dr. Libutti is chairman of the Cancer Institute at Montefiore Hospital in New York City, affiliated with Albert Einstein School of Medicine. His research at NCI focused on the formation of new blood vessels, which nourish tumors, as well as the interaction among tumor cells, endothelial cells, and components of the tumor microenvironment that influence tumor growth and spread. He has published widely on the pancreatic and neuroendocrine aspects of VHL, including pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. He has organized a team of physicians to deliver comprehensive care for people with VHL which is now one of our three clinical care centers in New York City.
Dr. Libutti is joining the Medical Advisory Board of the VHL Family Alliance after spending many years on the VHL team at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, where he has made important contributions to learning about VHL. As a medical advisor he will be taking that knowledge to a new position in the field, building a team around himself that will have access to his knowledge about VHL.
Dr. Libutti is an internationally recognized expert in endocrine surgery, providing surgical consultation and treatment for patients with disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands. In addition, he treats endocrine tumors in the pancreas and has been active in the surgical management of liver and gastrointestinal tumors.
He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, and the Society of University Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons.
While at the NCI, Dr. Libutti's work received numerous honors, including the NCI Director's Gold Star Award, the NCI Director's Innovation Award, and the NIH Director's Award.
